Ten Interesting Facts & Perks of Bedford Park, Bronx

While the Bronx isn’t known as the “forgotten borough” (I’m looking at you, Staten Island), it has received its fair share of skepticism over the years. However, much like the revitalization of Brooklyn & Queens, there are many areas throughout this borough where New Yorkers (and transplants alike) are choosing to rent or buy.

Here are ten interesting facts & perks of Bedford Park, Bronx.

1. It’s hidden in plain view! According to The Real Deal, this location is “a postcard-ready neighborhood full of Victorian homes surrounded by well-manicured gardens.” If you’re growing a family in New York, what could be better than that?

2. And it’s a deal. While housing prices aren’t as high as Riverdale, which is known as its “posh cousin across the Bronx,” this area represents a bargain for buyers. And I agree.

3. There’s affordable housing available, but with a catch. Earlier this year, almost 50,000 individuals applied in a public lottery for a below-market rate apartment. According to a spokesperson for the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, there were only 25 open spots in the Webster Avenue complex.

4. And would you blame these people for applying? Bedford Park is known for its luscious green space, such as the beautiful Harris Park. It was named after Father John Joseph Harris (1884-1937) because “he left such a strong impression in the Bronx that the City Council named this park in his honor in 1940.”

5. Manhattan or Westchester? Well, if you’re commuting to either location, you’re in a good location! Access to public transportation and major highways provides perks to young professionals getting started in the big city.

6. Beautiful buildings galore! In addition to the breathtaking Victorians that line the streets, interesting and diverse buildings are scattered throughout Bedford Park, such as the Tracey Towers. They were designed by noted architect Paul Rudolph and completed in 1972 as part of a housing development initiative.

7. In addition to diverse buildings, the neighborhood is diverse, too. According to the 2000 Census, the demographics were as follows: “60.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race, 13.5% African American, 17.07% White, and 8.76% from other ethnicities, including Korean, Indians, and Bangladeshis.”

8. Education is key! Bedford Park is home to “Education Mile,” which is a strip of institutions that includes Bronx High School of Science and Lehman College.

9. Yes, there’s culture and fun stuff to do! Last year, the first ever Yes the Bronx Film Festival took place at Lehman College. You can learn more about Bronx Arts Organizations by clicking here.
